Umibaizurah Mahir @ Ismail
Kuala Lumpur / Art Seasons
Umibaizurah’s (b. 1975, Malaysia) works are imagined hybrids of species, animals, nature, objects and machinery that link the multitude of issues concerning our contemporary world. As one of the most influential forces affecting modern life, consumerism has played a key role in the construction of our identity, and our endless desire for consumption drives our current identity crisis. Trying to fit into this consumer culture makes individuals lose their sense of self, their personality and their culture.
Umi pushes the traditional boundaries of ceramics would be an understatement. Over the many years that she has been active, ceramics has successfully been used as a medium to address and tackle many contemporary issues, occurring both domestically and globally. Among them are unfettered development at the expense of the environment, the state of the nation, and humanity through the lenses of economics and politics.
Umi will be presenting her works at Art Seasons.
