Art Porters presents Sharing the Moon, renowned Taiwanese artist Wu Kuan-Te’s solo exhibition, featuring incredibly detailed oil paintings reflecting the artist’s mystical inspiration from nature, infused by oriental philosophies.

In an almost ritualistic meditation before the blank canvas, Wu replaces the brush and executes the ‘subtractive’ oil painting techniques— as opposed to the traditional norm of additive oil painting — by scratching away paint with found objects such as branches, stones and seeds, gesturing with the entirety of his body, mind and emotion unto each mark. Through the process of repetitive mark-making, the artist enters an introspective state, reflecting pure imageries of nature in his strokes. It’s as if a seed has fallen onto the canvas, and blossoms exuberantly. The paintings expand naturally and freely, establishing a free-spirited essence.

A highlight of the exhibition is Wu’s unique circular work with a 360-degree perspective. With the back of the canvas mounted onto a rotating device, the work presents a fresh way of seeing, illustrating the eternal cycle of the universe. In the work, the bright reflective moon emits a golden glow, that nurtures all living things beneath it that shares its energy.
