Ronson Culibrina’s (b.1991, Philippines) practice bridges the gap between contemporary life and classical painting traditions through interventions that tackle socio-political issues and reference old masters in Filipino art history. The language employed in his work runs a wide gamut of icons and images that reflect on a multitude of themes including the exchange of culture and trade; the phenomenon of globalisation and subsequent diaspora; and the dynamic between art and economy amongst others. Culibrina has received distinctions from prestigious art competitions in the Philippines, most notably the 2018 Fernando Zobel Prize for the Visual Arts in the Ateneo Art Awards which granted a residency at Liverpool Hope University in the United Kingdom. Culibrina was also chosen by Forbes as one of its 30 Under 30 Asia: The Arts in 2016. He was also the recipient of the Grand Prize in the Philippine Long-Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) Visual Arts Competition in 2009 and the Special Citation in the Metrobank Art and Design Excellence (MADE) in 2014. He has exhibited extensively locally and overseas, presenting nine solo exhibitions across Singapore, Germany and the Philippines.
