Gallery SIDE 2 opened in 1997, to introduce the ideas and the works of international contemporary artists such as Rirkrit Tiravanija, Udomsak Krisanamis, Elke Krystufek, Karen Kilimnik who have not shown in Tokyo. In the past decade, the gallery started to work with local artists in their 20’s-30’s, currently representing 8 Japanese artists. Their works often make references to Western art history, Japanese tradition, and their everyday life. Seeking for a hybrid that reflects the reality of art making in Japan, it aims to introduce works that pushes the borders.
