S.E.A. Focus 2025: Yanyun Chen on ‘Veins, Grains, and Striae’ commissioned by Bank of Singapore

‘Veins, Grains, and Striae’ is a captivating work by Singaporean artist Yanyun Chen, commissioned by S.E.A. Focus 2025’s Main Sponsor, Bank of Singapore. It is inspired by the iconic Tembusu tree depicted on Singapore’s five-dollar bill to reflect upon familial kinship, legacy, and the enduring marks of time.

From the charcoal drawing of the Tembusu tree’s flesh in close-up, to pyrography on the tembusu wood flanking the portrait, the fissures and scars are beautifully captured to draw parallels between the tree’s flourishing and the growth of a family. This artwork commission is a testament to Bank of Singapore’s dedication to supporting artistic talent and fostering dialogue within Southeast Asia’s vibrant art community.

Visitors to S.E.A. Focus 2025 are invited to take in this thought-provoking work displayed in the Bank of Singapore Lounge, before it is added to the bank’s corporate collection.
